2011 Tennis Convention
Overcomes Ice Storm
:

The 2011 Indiana Tennis Convention took place Feb. 3-4-5 at the Wyndham Indianapolis West hotel despite several days of a massive ice storm throughout the Midwest.  About 90% of the registrants were able to attend in the combined venture of the Indiana HS Tennis Coaches Association and the USPTA Midwest Division.  About 250 coaches and pros attended at least a portion of the conference.  Another 4-6 inches of snow arrived during the final day of the convention.

One highlight was the presentation of the inaugural Ed Yarbrough Community Service Award.  The award was presented by Coach Yarbrough's wife, son, and daughter to veteran New Albany HS Coach Bob Dusch (in photo above).  Coach Yarbrough, the all-time victory leader in Indiana HS tennis, passed away in June 2010.  The award will annually honor a coach with a longtime commitment to developing a tennis program in his/her community.  Other criteria include passion, service to tennis, voluntarism, and dedication to teaching life lessons through the sport.

Selected as 2010 State Coaches of the Year were Bill Mountford of South Bend St. Joseph's (girls) and Mark Reilly of Jeffersonville (boys).
(Reilly is pictured below with IHSTECA president Tim Cleland)

Inducted into the Indiana HS Tennis Hall of Fame were Stan Malless Jr., Brian Fennerty, Steve Pittman, and Andrea Calvert Sanders (pictured below).

Bobby Cox, new commissioner of the Indiana HS Athletic Association, spoke during the convention.  He discussed the upcoming realignment of the tennis postseason tournament which will be worked on this spring and will take effect in the 2011-12 school year.

Bob Mount, Chair of USTA Officials for Central Indiana, spoke on common rules questions.  He discussed Medical Timeouts, the Point Penalty System, and USTA Rules Changes for 2011.  A summary of those changes will be posted on this site in the coming days.

More than a dozen other pros and coaches spoke on topics ranging from tennis technique to strategy to mental toughness to weight training.
