 Jasper's Ed Yarbrough
Dies After Brief Illness

Jasper High School Coach Ed Yarbrough, the winningest tennis coach in Indiana history, died early Saturday morning, June 19, in an Evansville hospital after a brief battle with pre-leukemia.

Coach Yarbrough won nearly 900 matches in a 40-year coaching career of boys' and girls' tennis at Jasper.  The 64-year-old Yarbrough transformed the small southern Indiana community into a tennis powerhouse, taking six boys' teams and six girls' teams to the IHSAA State Finals and winning the boys' state championship in 1999.

He was named National Tennis Coach of the Year in 2007.  He earned numerous coaching honors on a district and state level over the years and was inducted into the Indiana Tennis Hall of Fame in 1994.

Coach Yarbrough was a frequent speaker at the Indiana State Tennis Convention.  He was instrumental in upgrading the Indiana Tennis Hall of Fame at the Barbara S. Wynne Tennis Center in Indianapolis.  He was past president of the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association and played a major role in the expansion of the coaching association and the state convention.

Coach Yarbrough retired from teaching English at Jasper High School in 2005 but continued to coach the Jasper girls' team through this spring.  Midway through the season, he was diagnosed with pre-leukemia and faced a bone marrow transplant.  Susceptible to internal bleeding, he developed bleeding around the brain in recent weeks and passed away at 3:30 a.m. Saturday, June 19.

His son, Scott, who played for his father and was the 1988 state runner-up in singles, succeeds his father as Jasper tennis coach.  Ed is also survived by his wife, Judy, and a daughter, Keri.

Memorials can be directed to the Jasper Tennis Patrons for an indoor tennis project in the community.

Time to Nominate
for Post-Season Awards

Girls tennis coaches are reminded that the nomination deadline is approaching quickly for Post-Season Honors for your athletes.

To nominate, you must be a member of the Indiana HS Tennis Coaches Association.  You can join now by printing and mailing this membership form or can join online.

Academic All-State nominations are due by Friday, May 28.  Seniors who have played in the varsity lineup in at least half of the team's opportunities this spring can be nominated.  They must have a GPA of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale and an SAT minimum of 1650 on the 2400 point test or an ACT score of 24 or higher.  The GPA and test scores of all nominees will be plugged into a computer formula.  NEW THIS YEAR: All nominees who meet or exceed an established standard ratio will be named Academic-All-State.  The number of selections will vary from year to year, but the standard will be a fixed ratio.

Nominations for All-District / All-State also are due by Friday, May 28. These forms are mailed to our five district chairmen (names and addresses are available at the District Meeting site). Varsity singles or doubles players can be nominated for All-District.  The All-District teams then are selected at District meetings on Wednesday, June 2 throughout the state.  Players who make the All-District teams then automatically are considered candidates for the All-State team, which is chosen by a panel of IHSTeCA raters and officers from throughout the state.  NEW THIS YEAR: All-State Singles and Doubles teams are being expanded.  All-State Singles will be 15 First Team and 15 Second Team (no ties).  All-State Doubles will be 10 First Team and 10 Second Team (no ties).

Nominations also are being accepted for District Coach of the Year.  (This form can be found as part of the All-District / All-State form, which also includes the Player Record Form and the Criteria for all of the Postseason Awards.)

Anyone with questions about the postseason awards can email President Tim Cleland at tcleland@delcomschools.org

The Show Must Go On!
Despite snowstorm, coaches
still enjoy 2010 Convention

One of the biggest snowstorms of the season struck at the worst time -- midday Friday, Feb. 5 on the first day of the 2010 Indiana Tennis Convention.

But despite the difficult conditions, about 145 coaches braved the elements for the weekend convention.

In the end, it was another excellent convention, with educational sessions and outstanding hospitality by the Indianapolis Racquet Club.  Here are some updated links to check out:

Convention Report

Among the weekend highlights:

* US Naval Capt. Sean Buck, himself a member of the Indiana Tennis Hall of Fame, delivered an excellent keynote speech at the 2010 Hall of Fame induction ceremony.  Capt. Buck was reunited at the banquet with his legendary North Central HS coach, Byron Buckley, whom he had not seen for three decades (click on photo below for large version).  Acceptance speeches by inductees Steve Makurat, Jennifer Stephens Berger, and Rick Witsken also were outstanding.  Visit our Hall of Fame page.

* Wayne Bryan, father of the Bryan Brothers top-ranked doubles team, shined at Friday night's Fireside Chat at the Carmel Courtyard.  He also demonstrated many great doubles drills and team drills at Saturday morning's session.  He stressed fun and discipline and challenged the coaches to raise more money for their programs and to attract more fans to the matches.  Thanks to Coach Bryan and to his sponsor, Prince.

* Ed Brune, Jeff Rodefeld, Kevin Lindley, Mike Roenigk and all the staff at the Indianapolis Racquet Club made us feel right at home.  A member of the club even stopped IHSTeCA president Tim Cleland outside of the club as he was leaving on Saturday afternoon and said, "Thanks for bringing your group here.  We really look forward to having you each year!"  Now that's hospitality!

* Work continues on the renovation of the Indiana Tennis Hall of Fame.  Jim Clark, Ed Yarbrough and Bill Reed have now added team photos of all boys and girls state champs and are finishing State Coach of the Year plaques.  A Gold Plaque for top donors also is under construction.  And the staff is gathering memorabilia for a "history of Indiana tennis" display.

* The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association recently donated $2,000 to the Hall of Fame project.  Carmel Coach Sharon Rosenburgh, representing the ICGSA, presented this check to the IHSTeCA on Friday afternoon.  The ICGSA also has pledged $200 per year for the next 10 years.

* Thanks to A.J. Fager and Keith Parker for providing an outstanding speaker system for the convention.  The sound was great!

Our next convention will be a combined workshop with the Midwest USPTA club pros.  The dates are Feb. 3-4-5, 2011 at the Adams Mark hotel on the westside of Indianapolis.  This convention is held at the Adams Mark due to the large number of attendees -- more than 300.  Please plan to attend because the combined convention promises even more top speakers and more vendors.  We will then return to the Indianapolis Racquet Club in 2012 and beyond.

Eight at State

The IHSAA has voted to expand the boys' and girls' team State Finals to eight teams, starting this fall.  This has been a proposal of the Indiana HS Tennis
Coaches Association for the past few years.

Sectionals and regionals will remain the same.  Semi-states will become one round with eight winners advancing to state.  The eight winners will meet on Friday afternoon in Indianapolis for four quarterfinal matches.  Semifinals and final rounds will be played on Saturday.  The consolation match for third-fourth place has been eliminated.

Admission will be charged at semi-state and state matches to help offset expenses of the new Eight at State format.

Current semi-state sites will be retained, with two morning winners advancing from each site.

Rules Meetings to be Online

IHSAA Rules Interpretation tests will be conducted online for the 2009-2010 school year instead of mandatory attendance at meetings statewide.  The test will be available to coaches between July 27 and August 17.  The test should take 30-45 minutes.  All head coaches must pass the test or the school will be fined $50 by the IHSAA.

Boys' head coach must take the test between July 27 and August 17.  Girls' head coaches can take it then or can wait until a spring testing time.  Head coaches who have both the boys' and girls' teams will need to take the test only once per school year (in July or August).

Your athletic director should forward to head coaches the link information for the test.

22-Match Cap Rule Approved

The IHSAA has approved the new 22-match limit for high school boys and girls tennis, starting with the Fall 2009 season.  Teams will be able to schedule a maximum of 22 match opportunities, giving greater scheduling flexibility.  Teams may not exceed a maximum of 16 duals or a maximum of 5 tournaments.

Each round of a tournament is considered a "playing opportunity."  For example, if a team played three tournaments, each with three rounds, that is 9 match opportunities. That team then would be able to schedule a maximum of 13 duals to stay at the 22-match limit.

If a team played two tournaments, each with three rounds (6 opportunities), then that school could schedule as many as 16 duals.

2009 STATE TENNIS CONVENTION
IS A SMASH WITH PARTICIPANTS

The annual Indiana Tennis Convention was a huge hit Thursday, Feb. 5 through Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Indianapolis Racquet Club.  More than 190 coaches attended despite the tough economic conditions, and the evaluations showed that the coaches enjoyed the convention.

The annual Indiana Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremony was Friday, Feb. 6.  The inductees were Steve Gantz of Greenwood; Mike Owen of Evansville; Louise Owen of Evansville; Dave Heffern of Indianapolis Park Tudor; and John Greif of Evansville.
